RANDOM RATINGS #6
Hacks, Emma Chamberlain, Top Gun: Maverick, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Winning Time, They Call Me Magic, The Lake
A lot has been seen in the past 3 weeks, I gotta keep updating more often. Since the last RR I’ve accumulated a lot of shows and movies as well as music but, for now, I’m going to keep the list filled with options to add to your watchlist. I’ll make sure the next RR will be all about music, I promise.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022) created by Max Borenstein, Jim Hecht
I got into this show back when I was in Mexico, the NBA playoffs were just getting more exciting and (I had to use properly my HBOMax account that I couldn’t cancel from afar, so yeah) I began streaming this series with my partner but we left it hanging for a while and finally finished it on the Finals week (We were team Celtics, bummer). It is a great story to know about, it’s full of basketball icons, moments and history that is just unbelievable and super interesting at the same time.
Bonus rec: I fell in love with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I was amazed by his character, his wisdom and leadership so, in the moment I saw that he had a substack newsletter, I instantly subscribed.

They Call Me Magic (2022) dir. Rick Famuyiwa
To complete the pieces of the Lakers’ story I also watched this docuseries about Magic Johnson, he’s a cool dude, his story is interesting, I just think he is kind of a boomer. My advice: watch this after Winning Time as it is full of “spoilers” (I mean, you can call them spoilers even if it’s a real life story, no?)

I could put also that the NBA Finals is something to watch, but it’s already over. Basketball is one of the sports that I’ve been watching since I was a kid and I was never a self-proclaimed fan but I’m growing to like it even more than I already did. It’s easy, fast, fun, thrilling. As an spectator you get a lot of entertainment.
Emma Chamberlain - what’s good in new york (2022)
Ok, back to my fellow internet fan girlies: I was almost crying when I saw Emma upload. Nah I’m kidding, but I got really excited hahaha. I loved this video, you just go alongside Emma Chamberlain visiting NYC spots and she’s just talking and asking and being nice and unfiltered. I really like this girl, she has a lot of light.

The Lake (2022) created by Winter Tekenos-Levy, Lori-Ann Russell
This show is so refreshing, I think there are finally good, well-made comedies around. By well-made I intend to say that this has everything spot on: the setting is in a Canada lake, summer camp vibes*, the premise is there in the very first minutes, you can know the characters as soon as they speak, the whole series has contemporary values, the family trauma healing, teenagers and kids acting their age, funny script, funny story, I can go on but I’ll stop there. Go see it for yourself!
*Side note: i’m feeling like this could be very trendy soon, like the whole summer camp inspo, ringer tees, short shorts, diys,…

Hacks (2021-2022) created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky
Another one that became one of my favorite comedy shows as of late. An established yet outdated comedian gets paired up with a young comedy writer and they begin a weird work relationship. This is another example of a Devil Wears Prada reference but used in a very casual and funny show, every character is my favorite and everything that happens is very unexpected.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) dir. Joseph Kosinski
I’m not much of an action movie lover but THIS ONE. Hahaha I really liked this one when I saw it. The very first reason I wanted to watch it was because Miles Teller is in it, I didn’t know before and had zero intention to watch it until I heard that. Great movie to watch on a theatre, weird pacing but the action and thrills are there, also San Diego and the Blue Angels have a place in my childhood heart so it was nice seeing it in a London theatre, I felt weirdly American.
Oh, and everyone is so hot. Jennifer Conelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, even Tom Cruise looks very okay. It’s funny because the acting for a lot of the characters was just like: act cool and hot.

The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022) created by Jenny Han
I’m not gonna lie, after so much testosterone from Top Gun that very same day I got back home and NEEDED to watch this, actually I binged it with my partner for the whole night. I felt like a teenager and I did cry at the end. I loved the soundtrack mostly Olivia and Taylor and cool pop songs for the summer.
I remember when these books were all the rage, I never got them, when I was a teenager I used to be very anti being girly so I was kind of embarrassed to read them but noooow, I don’t care anymore I really enjoyed it and my inner teenage self did too. So yeah, it’s a warm summer must watch.
