RANDOM RATINGS #14
Welcome 2023: Tár, Sza, Stutz, Triangle of Sadness, Lana de Rey, The Sex Lives of College Girls and more
Hiii, happy new year! I spent the holidays resting and keeping up with my watchlist. I saw that over the last semester I missed out on going to the cinema and watching new, promising movies and shows; so I took the time to make some space, be in complete darkness and put on the vibesss to get into them. Also I had some albums on repeat… So here are my random ratings for the stuff I saw and listened to over these past two weeks. How did you spend your holidays?? Tell me about it :)
Lana del Rey - Honeymoon (2015)
This album has a place in my heart that I wouldn’t even have expected. I remember that when it came out, it was the album released after Ultraviolence and since it was a completely different vibe, I didn’t like it as much. Now it is one of my favorites from Lana del Rey. I love the cinematic feeling of it, the lyrics are like poetry I come back to. I will for sure make a special edition of RR just for her, I’m expecting her new album for me to write it, so wait for it!
Rating: 10/10 no skips.
Fav songs: The Blackest Day, God Knows I Tried, Terrence Loves You, Freak, Burnt Norton - Interlude

The Sex Lives of College Girls (2021) Created by Mindy Kaling
I didn’t know much about this show before I saw it. I’ve been missing out on HBO content since I’m in London, there’s no way to watch it here but to have another subscription to a separate company so I had to look for it somewhere else. I started a bit judgy, the characters were kind of predictable at first but then as the show progressed I really liked how original these girls were. The show is really about what the title says, it’s also about being young, reckless and the power of sisterhood. I love the friendship aspect of it, how it grew and the gossip/drama that formed along the way. There are two seasons out and it really kept me wanting to see a third one.
Rating: 9/10

Tár (2022) dir. Todd Field
I love me a good movie about music and this one is set between Berlin and NYC so that’s a plus definitely. I also adooore a good character by Cate Blanchett and this one lived up to the expectation. This is about cancel culture applied to a woman with trajectory and power, we follow an orchestra maestro — who is also a teacher — into her dreams of achieving her master piece, her great peak as a musician, soon the consequences of her behavior start to demolish her life. You have to have the mood to watch this as it is a slow movie, a fact that I enjoyed.
Rating: 8.3/10

Stutz (2022) dir. Jonah Hill
This documentary felt like reading a self-help book. It was lovely and full of insightful tools to apply on your self development. Jonah Hill interviews his therapist, Phil Stutz, and unfolds a bit of his life story, in between conversations they make space for his very own methods of going through life and being human in the form of simple graphics and big lectures. I found this film a very sweet one, as the movie progresses, the relationship between them becomes stronger and it culminates showing how meaningful this friendship is for both of them.
Rating: 9.5/10 would watch it again and again to take notes.

Sza- SOS (2022)
There’s nothing I love to listen most than a woman singer-song writer. When I listened to I Hate U in 2021 I could’ve sworn that’s all I needed from Sza, it was enough for me to love her additionally to Ctrl. This album was waaay more than I expected, by the time it arrived I forgot that I Hate U was just a single.
Rating: 9.0/10
Fav songs: Seek & Destroy, Kill Bill, I Hate U, Love Language, Ghost in the Machine (ft. Phoebe Bridgers)

Knives Out (2019) Glass Onion (2022) dir. Rian Johnson
I remember watching Knives Out when it first came out, I fell asleep by the moment I thought the case was solved but that was just half of the movie. Watching Onion Glass with my partner I understood that I found watching a mystery-solving movie to be quite boring if not shared. I also read this on TikTok: this is the perfect airplane movie. I would call it “dominguera”, movies that you see on Sundays with your family, just plain enjoyable and entertaining. It is funny to see Daniel Craig as some other person that is not James Bond. The plots and turns and twists are fun to be guessing and discovering. I wouldn’t say these are my favorite movies, but they’re good.
Rating: 8/10 both.

Aftersun (2022) dir. Charlotte Wells
Honestly, when I saw this movie I just was in for the daddy issues. I wanted to see a new twist on portraying the relationship of a young dad to his daughter, it was okay. I guess for this one I didn’t enjoy the pace, it was more visual than conversational as I would’ve liked but it’s part of the story… I guess.
Rating: 7.8/10

Triangle of Sadness (2022) dir. Ruben Östlund
I really really thought this was going to be funnier than it was. After watching the two seasons of White Lotus I felt like the plot was kind of similar, very Parasite too, like trying to portray the weird lives of people with money and privilege. I have to say the trailer is funnier than how they made the movie, it’s split in three parts and the scenes don’t give much of what is supposed to give. I would deeply recommend to skip the theater ticket to watch this, I really think this is going to be in streaming services as soon as the theatre season ends and you don’t want to watch rich people puking on a boat on the big screen.
Rating: 6/10 meh.
