Fashion trends, we hate them but we live by them. I say “we” as in the fashion lovers who can’t keep up with them anymore. The thing is, we don’t have to keep up with them. Fashion trends and fashion shows are for the buyers and the enterprises, the people who sell to us fashion items, clothes, accesories, shoes… The industry relies on them because they are based on our own behaviors, movements and contexts; trends show what is in fashion, what is the theme that is repeating and becoming a pattern in how we live so it becomes a pattern on what we consume. Not everyone gets into them and there are tons of them because every single person has different patterns so there’s one for every niche of people.
So how are trends even relevant in this newsletter that focuses on the infra-ordinary and daily ways of styling clothes?
A good method of knowing your style is by tracing your own trends on your closet! This is how I did it… I’ll start with the trends I saw in my closet and continue talking about the method and how to use it for yourself.
THE TRENDS
I have this thing with RED. Not too orange, not too pink, the perfect true Red. I don’t really know for sure if it suits me but it makes me feel so good to wear anything red. It’s the perfect pop of color. I relate it to being feminine with a 60s nouvelle vague hint to it. I have a pair of flats that I bought back in December and I’m ready for spring to come and wear them non-stop. I want to give them a try with socks on (à la MIU MIU), too.
I have as well noticed that I have to have a very good reason to buy clothes right on spot, like the Motomami t-shirt I got at Rosalía’s concert, I couldn’t leave without one. It has this red logo that I love and it’s so subtle yet cool. There’s other two items from this band-tee/merch “microtrend” of mine which are the Peggy Goods bucket hat and long sleeve tee from my DJ idol, Peggy Gou.
Blending in with the next trend…
I have this red tracksuit (jacket) from Adidas that I adoooore and haven’t stopped using since I bought it. It gives the perfect casual cool effect when I’m running quick errands in the city, an easy outfit.
I never thought I would be so into athleisure. I got into running like two years ago and then stopped because I couldn’t stand running in this cold city… But what I loved the most of doing exercise is the cute sport sets, of course. That’s what gives me motivation to move, not kidding at all. Look at those cute tops! The groovy print in that Marimekko x adidas top is so meeee.
Having these sets and individual items makes it so much easier to mix and match and have this small section of rotating outfits without buying so many things. Also I tend to buy things that I can overdress and wear in different ways as casual fits.
Next stop in my closet trends is an actual 2023 trend: tranquil blue.
This blue catches my eye immediately. It started with the glitter pants from Ojo Sagrado, I thought they were going to be too much when I bought them but was willing to take the risk (of maybe not using them enough, or not knowing how to style them) and it payed off! I’m kind of proud of saying that they’re soooo worn off hahah I love those pants: the perfect blue, glitter all over, wide leg and breezy fabric.
I began experimenting with monochrome outfits by pairing them with this Peggygoods long sleeve tee, the bucket hat AND this cute scarf from Séfr. Add a pair of cool sunglasses and accent purse and I’m ready to go!

I remember that wearing men sweaters and jackets truly started when I came to London. My partner gave lots of her clothes to me which happen to be almost a full collection of everything by the brand Folk, and let me tell you, those wool sweaters are eeeeverything. They add the perfect warmth, seriousness and elegance to any outfit. I normally pair them with very feminine skirts and long dresses to feel like I’m wearing something that Fiona Apple might wear…?
THE METHOD
So that’s what I saw for me. Mirroring the trends system of categorizing elements to sell to you, you can get into your closet to categorize your own style and know what to buy if you’re planning on it.
To do this is practically a game of observation, questioning and using the information that you get. Ask yourself…
What are your go-to pieces?
If you have to get dressed in less than 5 minutes, what do you grab?
Is there an item that you really love just by looking at it?
Do you see a color that’s repeating in your closet?
Now if you need to take things out, make a mess, go ahead. If not, the next thing is to find the common thread…
What does everything have in common?
Are there some items of the same color? Same brand? Same style? Same vibe?
What words would describe these items of the same category?
Try to narrow it down into 3-5 categories, not too big, not too narrow. You want concise information to help you keep the common threads in mind.
What can you do with your closet trends?
Next time you want to buy something you know what to look for! Let your imagination flow and create better outfits this season/year.
From my own example I can say that what I will be searching on a shopping day is:
Chunky socks for my ballet flats, possibly in a contrasting color to red, which could be a baby blue, a very soft pink or maybe an off-white to keep the nouvelle vague vibe.
Anything that could be worn with the blues and reds that I love… Some top with an embroidered detail in those colors, maybe accesories that match,…
If I keep buying clothes to work out I would want to keep it matching in style and color. I’m an adidas girl now, too.
Long skirts, feminine maxi dresses and cute collar tops are perfect to match with the menswear stuff that I have. Whenever I’m thrifting I’m going to have that in top of my head.
It’s your turn to do it! Tell me all about your spotted trends, I want to see <3
