Hey there! Quick intro: this is a one thing led to another, then that reminded me of another, and so on kind of post, this all happened in one to two days maybe. I got stuck in the internet and I’m rating everything in order of consumption. This is for the raging girlies on this day.
It all started on TikTok, as it normally does… This girl made a video saying “when a girl’s room is messy, it’s Sofia Coppola. It’s hell is a teenage girl. It’s Lindsay Lohan in an early 2000s movie. It’s indie, it’s hot.”

This took me to my first stop, Google: “hell is a teenage girl” quote.
Somehow this is supposed to be the opening line to Jennifer’s Body and so I started my media research.
Jennifer’s Body (2009) dir. Karyn Kusama
I’m still wondering where those lines were said… Anywayyys, I’m so glad I didn’t watch this movie when it came out, I was a bit of a hater and I remember that the trailer cringed me but oh god! This movie is so good. It’s so 2009. It has the emo-turns-to-indie sound, the small town in the forest twilight setting, the I Kissed a Girl bi representation, I love it. I’m not gonna lie, I was a victim of the jump scares but more than scary, the plot is a genius joke.
Rating: 9.1/10

Next thing, I wasn’t satisfied without listening to that line, so I kept searching. It all lead me to this article that I found quite interesting.
Who runs the world? Not teen girls. (2021) Written by Constance Grady
This article is basically a long review of how people make teen girls fandoms less. Teen girls make the mainstream by loving something so much and anyone around call their taste “basic” and not take any media that girls like seriously. But this is slowly changing.
The analysis goes on and it ends on the observation that capitalism is taking advantage and had found a source of income in the passion of teenage girls, now we see how convenient it is to use the fandom and devotion of teen girls to make money yet, hypocritically, that’s the only reason why society doesn’t belittle them so much anymore.
Rating: 8.3/10, too long on the same note yet full of truths.

After reading this piece, I was reminded of how much I adored Olivia Rodrigo’s album Sour and the imagery of her music videos full of resentment and rage including arson.
Good 4 U (2022) dir. Petra Collins
Screw that and screw you! I looove Petra Collins since I myself was a teenager so this was a collab that moved everything inside me when it came out. I feel like I relate so much to Olivia Rodrigo, Sour is an album that really speaks to me and I’m saying this while still trying to be self aware that this is an album full of mixed emotions in its lyrics. I wouldn’t say is toxic, I don’t like that word. It’s full of human emotions, a very raw and pure representation of a breakup process that hits on insecurities, simple as that. To be able to put these different reactions from longing to jealousy, nostalgia and betrayal so easily in a pop song is talent.

Neeeext, I went to Youtube on a normal day looking for any good video out there from my subscriptions and luckily I found this one that related to everything I have been searching upon. By this time, I totally forgot about not actually knowing where the “hell is a teenage girl” quote from. I kind of let it go (?). Anyways, I found this commentary video on female rage by Alice Capelle.
why female rage is here to stay (2022) by Alice Cappelle
The intro gave me chills. Alice explains how women characters on screen are becoming more complex and are showing this range of emotions that are not normally tied to what femininity is. While we do relate women’s sadness as something beautiful, female rage is seen as hysterical, mad, unbelievable that a woman can have this range of emotions. Check out the video to get more in depth on this topic.
Rating: 10/10 I always enjoy Alice’s videos and way of explaining modern complex topics.

To finish off this rabbit hole I have this marvelous collection of clips from Big Little Lies. I cannot recommend this show enough.
Big Little Lies (2017) Created by David E. Kelley
This show makes you disappear into this world of role model white moms in California who have everything, they begin a tumultuous relationship when they have to keep a secret that can change their perfect appearance to society. The cast, the intro song, the PCH rides, the comfortable lives of these women, the made up drama, the plot twists, the mystery, everythiiiing is so good.
Rating: 9.7/10!

Honorable mention: I cannot leave without recommending Midsommar, it’s another female rage masterpiece. If you have not seen it, do it now!!!! It was such a cathartic moment the day I saw it, I couldn’t stop crying, laughing, feeling crazy in a good way.
