RANDOM RATINGS #8
Arctic Monkeys, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Official Competition, Wet Leg, Beyoncé, Indian Matchmaking and Apple TV recs.
Get ready for the longest RR ever written, I’m thinking this could be things to watch/listen to this weekend. I have soooo much to recommend and talk about, lots of obsessions, new music that I had to add to this list, and lots of ideas for the next Random Ratings because I added two of my favorite things ever to this newsletter. So here I come…
Official Competition (2021) dir. Gastón Duprat, Mariano Cohn
I loved this movie beginning to end. Watching this I noticed that I adore this type of movies, where there are 3 or less well developed characters and each of them form a very important part on the understanding and feeling of the story; no one is missed, no one is irrelevant. I was amazed by the performance of Penélope Cruz, I really saw her as Lola, not as an actress playing the role of Lola, you know?
This movie had a twisted humor to it, the sets, the styling, the dialogues, the pacing, everything was on point, everything was working to walk you through the ending, which is a very unexpected, well kind of expected, like you would think about it but discard it at first because you deeply think that would ruin the story but it happens… Go watch it! (if it’s in a big screen, that’d be better).

RuPaul’s Drag Race (2009-present) * Season 1-8 for now *
I remember when a friend of mine said a few years ago “Have you seen RuPaul’s Drag Race? You would love it!” I finally started (binge) watching it and she was right, I'm obsessed! I love everything about it, the challenges, the outfits, the gayness, love, love, love. If you are into reality competition shows, give it a go :) My favorite seasons have been 1, 3 and 6. I’m in season 8 so, no spoilers please!
Rating: 10/10
Fav drags by season: Ongina, Jujubee, almost everyone from season 3 but Alexis Mateo has a place in my heart, Chad Michaels, Jinx Monsoon, Adore Delano and Violet Chachki <3

Indian Matchmaking (2020-present)
I started watching Indian Matchmaking just to have something to watch in the background while I make some outfit content for Tiktok, and it was a very good decision. This show is sooo interesting, the personalities are funny, the people that they follow are strong characters and this made me see marriage in a whole nother point of view, there are people out there that are seeking someone to spend their lives with and Seema, the matchmaker is a professional that looks into these persons, studies them, gets to know them and wants to find the perfect match for them. I love how they incorporate traditional beliefs and horoscopes and face readings to make it happen.

Wet Leg (2022) Wet Leg
These girls make me believe that alt-rock is not completely dead. I’m always happy to listen to new rock music and more when it’s made by women. This whole album is a no-skip, from beginning to end it’s energetic and fun. It has some garage vibes, it reminded me of Girlpool with way better vocals and production. They have been headlining Harry Styles, I think and they were featured in Obama’s playlist the one he makes every year. Give it a listen, I’m sure it’ll make you move.
Rating: 9.3/10
Fav songs: Being in Love, Wet Dream.

There’d Better Be a Mirrorball (2022) Arctic Monkeys
The Arctic Monkeys are baaaack! This new single sounds like a continuation of TBH+C and I’m so excited for the whole new The Car album. I am really hoping that they kind of keep this style but go a little bit rougher somehow… I would expect something like The Strokes did with their last album, something like a compilation of styles that make them them. I want to do a whole RR about the Arctic Monkeys, sooo stay tuned for that :)
Rating: 9.9/10 just because I am excited

RENAISSANCE (2022) Beyoncé
Talk about Virgo’s Groooove, she delivered it! I am very much in love with this album, it’s just like the perfect music to listen to whenever. It’s chill, it’s danceable, it’s empowering, it gets you going. It kinda sounds like a weird match of house music and Beyoncé’s vocals style, but it works. Put it on while walking around and feel the groove!
Rating: 9.2/10

What to watch on Apple TV when you get a three month trial? Physical, Loot and Watch the Sound!
Apple TV gives you quality shows. The thing is that there are not so many things to watch in my opinion. I have gotten a three month trial because I changed my phone so I started watching Physical, a “light” drama set in the 80s about a aerobics instructor played by Rose Byrn. The character is the main focus, she has passion and an ambition to be the greatest aerobics instructor but she has an eating disorder and a self-loathing critical voice in her head that gets in the way. Definitely a very entertaining and interesting show.
Rating: 9/10
Loot is a comedy starring Maya Rudolph, who I looove. It’s about a millionaire’s ex wife that starts to work at the charity that was in her name, she gets close to the team and starts a nice friendship and work life that she didn’t expect to change her life.
Rating: 8.5/10
Watch the Sound is a documentary show with Mark Ronson. The famous producer explains lots of interesting things about music and sound, I love taking a deep dive into these subjects, I find it amazing when people have this strong sensibility of sound.
