In London you can already feel the Holiday Season: it’s fucking freezing outside, there’s lights and decorative stars on mostly every high street and the shopping freaks on Oxford Circus (don’t ask why I would be there) make it impossible to get on a train. I’ve been in the streets so much these days and a quite bit busy that I just want to make a list of EVERY movie that I wish I was seeing right now to get in the Winter Fantasy, slow down for a while and choose in what world would I want to feel in when it gets snowy in the city, hopefully this week.
I don’t plan to make this list full of Christmas themed movies, quite the opposite, I want to show you movies that give you the SETTING, it can be the big city, the suburbs, the magical land, THAT COLD PLACE where any story can happen this season.
A Romantic Grin
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) - a classic
The Holiday (2006) - technically it’s a Christmas movie but it is sooo goood
Two Night Stand (2014) - more reasons to fall in love with Miles Teller
Love Dramas
Phantom Thread (2017) - the low key craaaaziness, that last scene !!!
Carol (2015) - Rooney Mara is my all time crush, this movie is just okay
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - in high school you used to be cool if this was your favorite movie, so that makes it a classic
Edward Scissorhands (1990) - I wouldn’t miss this one anytime it was on TV
Mysterious Affairs
Eyes Wide Shut (1999) - This is what winter dreams and fantasies in the city are made of
The Shining (1980) - you just have to!
Suspiria (2018) - it features everything I love: Berlin, witches, dancing, Dakota Johnson
Real Life Feeling
Little Women (2019) (1994) - Both will make you cry and live love laugh
How to be Single (2016) - It shows all the seasons but I had to find a way to put my favorite movie in this list: the Christmas part is just adorable
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) - a coming of age about friendship and learning to have fun
Groundhog Day (1993) - Bill Murray movie for the heart
Heart-warming Fantasies
Where the Wild Things Are (2009) - I don’t know how to explain the BEAUTY of this film
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Cute until the end, Wes Anderson style
Ice Princess (2005) - it gives you the ice skating competition rush, just amazing, the girlies know
These Women!!
Anastasia (1997) - I have to say that the Latino version with Thalia singing slaps. From Russia to Paris, this movie feels like an animated Eurotrip in the winter.
Anna Karenina (2012) - Have I read the book? of course not if this period movie with Keira Knightley exists, duh
I, Tonya (2017) - Pure gossip, the story to understand why so many people use the Tonya Harding reference when a mysterious accident happens in a competition (by so many people and competition I am just referring to Ru Paul’s Drag Race)
These are of course movies I have watched and highly recommend, I know there’s a lot more out there so feel free to comment below which other movies would you add to this non-holiday winter movies?
sometimes i do miss the chaos of oxford st during the holidays!
